A mock editorial illustration for a previously published article on the evolutionary theory of the migration of snails to the islands of Hawai'i.
The goal for this project was to create a mock editorial illustration and two spot illustrations for a previously published article.
Details: 5 x 7'' main illustration, 3 x 3'' spot illustrations, 300dpi
The article that inspired this illustration is a popular science piece that looks at current theories for the evolutionary origin of snails on the islands of Hawai'i. The concept for the final piece focuses on the predominant theory that snails crossed the ocean nestled into birds' feathers. I wanted to create a composition that held the energy of an ocean wave, but also showcased that mode of transportation with a feather. It is my hope that this shared line of action between the feather at the bottom and the water at the top would have had more meaning to the viewer after reading the article.
The models for this illustration were created using Cinema 4D and rendered using the Octane engine. This project gave me the opportunity to practice several different modeling techniques (e.g., box, spline, and subdivision surface modeling), as well as experiment with Octane materials and render settings.
