A map of Harvard Square and the surrounding area in Cambridge, MA.
Details: 3000 x 2400 300dpi
The concept for this map was to note interesting (and perhaps a bit unique) places around Cambridge that you could find yourself having an interesting conversation in. Drawing from personal experience, I choose locations where I have had delightful and sometimes unexpected social experiences.
After making my initial sketches of each location, I focused on the style language for the piece. I knew that I wanted to combine traditional and digital media, creating something in the style of popular illustrated maps I have seen both in print and online. I created hand lettered sheets of text and textured samples made from black ink and brushes, pens, and other various mark-making tools.
I used Illustrator to create all of the elements of the map, and then applied the high resolution scans I had made of the text and textures in Photoshop.
